This summer, Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto is transforming the Nef of the Grand Palais d’été into an immersive, sensory space with Nosso Barco Tambor Terra (Our Drum Boat Earth), a monumental installation made of crochet, bark, and spices, inviting awe and shared experiences.
Designed to be explored and inhabited, this multisensory environment expresses a fundamental relationship with nature and explores the continuity between our own bodies and that of the Earth through handcrafting, organic materials, and ancestral techniques. The work draws inspiration from the profound impact of sailing and navigation on the world, which have changed the relationships between people and places.
Neto transforms images and symbols associated with these histories into a collective, ritualistic communion through his porous architecture. The sculpture incorporates a wide variety of instruments from around the world, with periodic activations during which visitors are invited to enter and play the drums concealed within.
By uniting our cultural differences, the artist poetically evokes the possibility of universal communication through pulses and rhythms.
A rich program of events extends the experience around the installation: concerts, workshops, and “Bavart’dages” tours invite visitors of all ages to explore themes dear to the artist, from music and textiles to Brazilian history and climate issues.
