To celebrate the 25th anniversary of its designation as European Capital of Culture and the 30th anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the city of Avignon has entrusted an enchanting artist with the task of transforming its iconic sites and museums, in order to reveal their richness and uniqueness.
From June 28, 2025, to January 4, 2026, Jean-Michel Othoniel will unveil a vast artistic constellation in Avignon, the city of the Popes, with Love as its celestial vault. A major event, a first on a national scale, and the largest project ever conceived by the sculptor. With this exceptional exhibition, spread across 10 unique venues, Jean-Michel Othoniel will present more than 260 works for Avignon.
It will take over the Palais des Papes , the Pont d'Avignon , the Musée du Petit Palais–Louvre in Avignon , the Musée Calvet , the Muséum Requien , the Musée Lapidaire , the Chapelle Sainte-Claire , the Bains Pommer , the Collection Lambert and the Place du Palais .
The exhibition "OTHONIEL COSMOS or the Ghosts of Love" traces a gigantic, monumental path that populates the city's free institutions and historical sites.
The artist has created works that will be revealed from one location to the next, intersecting sculpture and painting, bricks and pearls, astrolabes and fountains, gold and glass, totems and infinite knots. Structured around the theme of romantic passion, this unparalleled exhibition is orchestrated like a grand operatic machine, culminating on August 1st and 2nd with an installation and performance in the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes, specially choreographed by Carolyn Carlson for principal dancer Hugo Marchand and dancer Caroline Osmont of the Paris Opera, accompanied by Juha Marsalo of the Carolyn Carlson Company .
